Today was a real treat spending time with Sara and exploring her journey as an artist and creative. Chatting with Sara makes it evident that her passion for art is still as strong as ever and the idea of experimenting with something new, from the size of the artwork or the technique being used still challenges her.
Talking to Sara, it’s evident her life has been full of creativeness and lots of fabulous experiences in the creative field. Sara explained that when she was young she was very musical, but knew she wouldn’t be a concert pianist, so she studied politics and political history at University. Her affinity for art was always clear, and it was lovely to hear stories of her teaching children and always straying into the creative side of teaching with art and music.
Painting commenced with decorating her family homes. She only decided to study Art at college after stopping work as a studio manager in an advertising agency, which slightly shocked her husband. This creativeness has been shared within her family; her children and grandchildren learned how to sew at a young age.
Sara explained that the business commenced when she obtained her own studio and started selling in galleries, art fairs, and with dealers. She sold cards at Covent Garden and experimented with jewellery making.  From there Sara studied for her Master’s in printing.
Sara’s work is now mainly in paint and ink, although there are some current experiments with colour pencils. She loves to draw inspiration from being out and about, perhaps painting daily on holiday or just noticing a shadow on the road and sketching it repeatedly until the work gains colour and meaning. Sara explained her love for colour and how a colour can change when placed next to a different colour, hence the repetition of drawings and paintings before committing to the final piece of art work.
Now Sara sells her work in galleries in Veryan, Bodmin and St Mawes. Her newly built studio is a fabulous base that customers can access.
Local spaces, coastlines and surroundings clearly inspire the colour and shapes that Sara uses, which evoke a feeling or reaction.
Sara explained that she takes inspiration from Matisse, Ivor Hitchens and Mark Rothko, primarily for the colour used in the artwork but also for the abstract nature and the brushstrokes. Sara explained that the brushstroke and marking constitute the image, just one brushstroke can bring that part of an artwork to life.
Sara explained that having recently moved house she is undergoing a process of rebirth, assessment, and rethinking. Perhaps on the cusp of starting something new, Sara has clear ideas about building her large artwork and the potential of working in that space, which also excites her, despite a little fear about thespace too! Sara explained that taking on a large piece of artwork is like striding out on a long coastal walk: the definite steps and the liberation that it can bring.
